Before he became known for his barbecue sauce, Hecky Powell was the Executive Director of Neighbors at Work, a community economic development association in Evanston.
But after years in social service, he felt he could do more for the community by giving local kids jobs and teaching them a trade. He bought the small restaurant at the corner of Emerson and Green Bay Roads in 1983, and Hecky’s Barbecue was born.
To continue in this mindset of giving back, the Forrest E. Powell Foundation was founded in 1994, honoring the legacy of work ethic that built Hecky's Barbecue, and continues through annual vocational scholarships.
Founding a successful restaurant is only one of Hecky’s accomplishments. He has also created the refreshing “Juneteenth Strawberry Soda.” Delectably fruity, it’s “A Sweet Sip of Freedom” and the perfect partner for Rib Tips or a Pulled Pork Sandwich. Juneteenth is a national celebration that honors The Emancipation and how its message was finally delivered to the far reaches of the country on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Act was signed. Red foods (like saucy BBQ!) and red beverages are traditional fare served at Juneteenth celebrations. All of the Juneteenth Strawberry Soda profits go directly to the Forrest E. Powell Foundation, which provides scholarships to ambitious youth seeking vocational mentoring, education, and careers.
